Lanark County Family and Children Services (FCS) contacted county OPP to request assistance in a joint investigation into a reported child abuse incident. FCS had received a call from a school regarding a 9 year old disclosing his mother struck him in the face. The injury, not initially noticeable, became more visible throughout the day, showing minor swelling. The boy, diagnosed with autism, further reported having been slapped “a bunch of time” and having been punched by his mother. The mother, identified as Samantha, reportedly admitted the assault to school staff. After further investigation, including interviews with the child and Samantha, she was arrested and charged with assault.
Result: The charge was simply withdrawn by the Crown after her cooperation with CAS and all the extenuating circumstances of the file, including the child’s disability.
