In March 2021, the Street Crimes Unit of Ottawa Police Services was investigating a suspected drug trafficker. On two separate occasions, Quentin was with the target suspect when police purchased a total of 3.9g of Fentanyl. On a third occasion, in May 2021, Quentin was again with the target suspect when police purchased 0.9g of cocaine. At this time, Quentin and the target were arrested, and both were charged with trafficking of a Controlled Schedule I substance, and possessing proceeds obtained by crime under $5000. When the police seized Quentin’s phone, they called the phone of the main suspect and it rang on Quentin’s phone, leading to an inference that he was part of the trafficking.

Result: Charges were withdrawn. After many discussions with the Federal Crown, they were unwilling to simply withdraw the charges. We had to set a trial date. About one week before the trial was due to begin, the Crown agreed to the proposal that the Defence had made at the outset. Quentin did some community service, and the charges were withdrawn. The reason was because it couldn’t be proven that his participation during the transactions was any more than a viewer. He didn’t handle money, utter any threats, or handle any drugs.
