On April 29th, OPP received a call from a local high school. The vice principal indicated that a female student had reported allegations of inappropriate touching by a male student. PC Andreyevik and his colleague Cara Wilkes were dispatched to speak with the complainant, Cindy Smith. On May 1st, Cindy provided a video statement, describing her relationship with the accused as initially wanting to only be friends, but that the prior year Logan had made comments that led her to believe he wanted to be more than friends.
Cindy indicated that at the beginning of their Grade 10 year, while in shop class, Logan placed both hands on her hips. Several weeks later in the same class, Logan touched her thigh up to her midsection, then hooked on to her underwear. Multiple other incidents of unwanted touching were described throughout the video statement.
As a result of the investigation, Logan was charged with one count of sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age, and one count of criminal harassment.
Result: After negotiation with the Crown, it was agreed that since he was a youth, it would be of benefit to focus on his rehabilitation rather than punishment. To that end, Logan engaged in counselling, changed schools, and ultimately acknowledged some touching but not for a sexual purpose. He entered a guilty plea to assault and was given probation as a sentence. While not a spectacular result, it was a good compromise.
