On February 25th, Karen was at her residence with her ex-husband Charles. At some point, he became upset that their cat was urinating in the basement, causing unpleasant odors, and ended up throwing the cat against the living room wall. He also threatened to kill the cat if it kept urinating in the basement. Karen also reported that the previous August, Charles grabbed her throat and she fell as a result of being pushed against a closet. She further reported physical confrontations that occurred in summer 1994 and August 2007.
As a result of their investigation and discussions with Karen, police found cause to charge Charles with cruelty to animals (unnecessary pain, suffering or injury), uttering threats (injure animal), and three counts of spousal assault.
Outcome: Despite rigorous negotiation, the Crown were stubbornly unwilling to resolve this matter to the satisfaction of Charles. They insisted on a guilty plea or a trial. Charles was dissatisfied that we were unable to obtain the result he wanted and decided to change counsel.
