On April 29th, 2023, at the Dover Court Recreation Center in Ottawa, Pamela was attending her third session of the National Lifeguarding Course. The accused, John, watched the session from a second-floor viewing area. Afterward, John texted Pamela to meet him upstairs, where they got into a verbal argument. As Pamela tried to leave, John grabbed her arm but released her, allowing her to leave the building.

On May 6th, 2023, John again attended Rousseau’s session. During the session, he became upset, believing Pamela was talking to another male. He texted her derogatory messages and demanded she meet him upstairs. Fearing for her safety, Pamela tried to leave, but John intercepted her, forcing her to go upstairs. In a dark hallway, John verbally assaulted her, calling her offensive names. He pushed her to the ground, threw her backpack, and continued yelling at her. He then strangled her briefly before releasing her. Pamela fell to the floor, and John ordered her to get up.

They walked past two cleaners, and John ensured Pamela wasn’t visibly upset before they left the building separately.

On November 24th, 2023, John voluntarily attended the Ottawa Police Service headquarters at 474 Elgin Street, where he was arrested by Detective Wilson. John refused to participate in a police interrogation. He was charged with assault, assault by choking, and mischief, and was released on an undertaking with conditions.

Outcome: The client insisted on his innocence and we arranged a trial date. Unfortunately, he was unable to come up with the required funds and we had to end our relationship.
