Just before 6am on April 16th, Special Cst. Briggs noticed an SUV almost in the ditch on the eastbound side of March Rd. After pulling up alongside the vehicle, Cst. Briggs made several attempts to get the attention of the driver before requesting assistance from Ottawa Police and paramedics. After several minutes, the driver finally woke up and was shocked by the presence of police. After confirming the driver’s name as Alan, Cst. Briggs went on to form reasonable suspicion that Alan was intoxicated, and subsequently arrested after providing a failing result in a roadside screening device. At the police station, breath readings of 144 and 164 were obtained. Alan was charged with operation while impaired.
Outcome: The client pleaded guilty to careless driving. He avoided a criminal record and didn’t have a further suspension of his driver’s licence. He did get a fine and did have to install the interlock machine into his vehicle for a year.
